The Outside Circle
As a songwriter and author of western novels, Mike Blakely has always enjoyed songs about the cowboy life and Wild West history. His first two CDs, years ago, were strictly western.
“For my 13th album, I’m returning to that genre,” he said.
THE OUTSIDE CIRCLE includes ten songs about cowboys, open ranges and the Wild West.
Mike wrote six of the songs himself, including fan favorite, “The Hat Song.” He co-wrote three other tunes with Damon Rogers, a full-time cowboy, buckaroo and horse trainer. “The Colorado Trail,” a traditional cowboy song from the 1880s that Mike has performed for years rounds out the multi-faceted CD.
The album was co-produced by Walt Wilkins and Ron Flynt, who have worked together for over a decade at Ron's Jumping Dog Studios in Austin, TX. Both are nationwide veterans of the music scene. Walt recruited some of the most gifted musicians in Texas to contribute their enormous talents to THE OUTSIDE CIRCLE. The result – described by Walt as "enlightened campfire music" – blends acoustic instruments, vocal harmonies and a few electric guitars with lyric-driven story songs about the joys and hardships of life in the West, past and present.
